Why does a sewer keep backing up after it was snaked?

Because clearing a blockage and finding out why it formed are two different jobs. If only the first one was done, the second question is still open — and recurrence is the answer arriving late.

Recurrence is information, not bad luck

A line that blocks once has told you very little. A line that blocks again — especially in the same way, at roughly the same interval — has told you something quite specific: whatever caused the first blockage is still there.

That is worth sitting with, because the intuitive response is to assume the clearing was done badly. Sometimes it was. More often the clearing was fine and simply did not address something it was never going to address.

What clearing does, and where it stops

A cable clears a path. Depending on the head fitted and how the line is worked, that path can be narrow or close to the pipe's full diameter — and the difference matters enormously for how long it lasts.

But even a thorough job has a boundary. Clearing removes what is obstructing the line. It does not repair pipe, close the opening that admitted roots, restore a deteriorated wall, or realign a joint that has shifted. If the reason waste caught in that spot is structural, the structure is unchanged when the cable comes out.

So the useful question after a repeat backup is not "was it cleared properly?" but "what is still in there that catches things?"

What is usually still there

  • Roots. Cutting removes the mass inside the pipe. The root outside is alive, the opening it entered through is unchanged, and regrowth is expected rather than surprising. Recurrence on a roughly seasonal rhythm is characteristic. See root intrusion.
  • Buildup on the pipe wall. A cable can pass through grease and sludge without removing much of it. Drainage is restored; the diameter is not. The line then blocks again once ordinary use exceeds what remains. See grease, sludge and scale.
  • Scale. In older cast iron the rough interior is part of the pipe rather than a deposit on it. It gives passing waste something to snag on, permanently.
  • An offset joint. Where sections have shifted, the resulting lip catches material. Blockages that recur at a consistent distance along the line are a classic sign.
  • A pipe defect. Cracks and damaged sections disturb flow and trap material. A defect does not clear.
  • A low section holding water. Standing water slows flow and lets solids settle out in the same place each time.
  • Access limitations. Sometimes the honest answer is that the available access does not reach the section where the trouble actually is, so the work has been happening in the wrong place.

What the interval tells you

How long the line lasted between clearings is genuinely diagnostic, and it costs nothing to notice.

  • Days to a couple of weeks. Suggests very little was actually removed, or that a substantial obstruction remains just beyond where the work reached.
  • A few months, fairly consistently. Suggests something accumulating at a steady rate — buildup, or roots regrowing.
  • A year or more, then shortening. Suggests a condition that is progressing rather than static.
  • Irregular, tied to heavy use. Suggests a line with reduced capacity that copes until demand rises.

None of these is conclusive on its own. All of them are worth mentioning to whoever looks at the line next.

Why looking inside becomes reasonable

After the first backup, clearing is a sensible response. After the second or third, clearing again without finding out why is a decision to keep paying for the same twenty minutes indefinitely.

A camera inspection is what converts the guesswork above into observation. It can show roots and where they enter, how much buildup is on the wall, whether a joint has offset, whether a section holds water, and what the pipe is made of.

It has real limits, which are worth knowing before you pay for one: it cannot see through standing sewage, it cannot pass an obstruction that has not been cleared, and it cannot establish that every part of a line is sound. Clearing usually has to come first for an inspection to show anything at all.

Where the findings need to outlast the visit — because a contractor will quote from them, or because you want a record of a line with a history — a documented inspection is the version that produces something you can keep.

Questions worth asking

Before the same line is snaked a third time, these are reasonable things to ask whoever is proposing it:

  • How far in did the cable meet resistance, and was it the same distance as last time?
  • What came back on it?
  • What diameter head was used, and could a larger one reach more of the wall?
  • Is there a reason to think this is buildup rather than a pipe condition, or the other way round?
  • Would looking inside change what gets recommended?

These are not hostile questions. Anyone who works on sewers regularly will have opinions about all five.
