Effective diameter versus actual diameter
A drain line is sized for a certain flow. That figure assumes the pipe's full internal diameter is available.
Buildup on the pipe wall removes part of that. A line that is nominally four inches across but carries a half-inch of accumulated material all the way round is functionally a three-inch line — and the reduction in capacity is steeper than it sounds, because flow depends on cross-sectional area rather than diameter. Losing a modest amount of wall thickness removes a substantial share of the capacity.
This is why an older line can block repeatedly on ordinary use that gave it no trouble years earlier. Nothing changed about the household. The pipe changed.
Grease
Cooking fats and oils leave a fixture as warm liquid. They do not stay that way. As they travel and cool, they thicken and adhere to the pipe wall — most readily where the line is cool, where flow slows, and on surfaces that are already rough.
Once a grease layer exists it is not passive. It is sticky, so food particles and solids stick to it, and each addition gives the next one more to hold on to.
Kitchen branch lines are the usual site. Food-service properties see this at a scale most homes never do.
Sludge
Sludge is the softer accumulation of solids, soaps, fine debris and organic material that settles where flow is slow. Low sections and the bottom of the pipe are where it collects, since that is where velocity drops and suspended material falls out.
Sludge is generally easier to move than grease, but it contributes to the same narrowing and often occupies the part of the pipe carrying most of the flow.
Scale
Scale is a different thing entirely, and worth separating.
In older cast iron pipe, the interior surface degrades over decades. The result is a rough, layered, mineralized texture — sometimes described as tuberculation — that both narrows the line and, more importantly, gives passing waste something to catch on. A smooth pipe passes material that a scaled pipe of the same nominal diameter will snag.
Unlike grease, scale is part of the pipe's own deteriorated surface rather than a deposit sitting on it. It does not soften, and removing it is a different proposition from removing grease.
Why this looks different from an isolated blockage
- Drainage degrades over months or years rather than stopping one day.
- Several fixtures on the affected line slow together.
- Clearing works, then the interval before the next problem shortens.
- The line handles light use but backs up under sustained flow — a shower running while a washing machine drains.
- Nothing unusual was flushed, and no obvious culprit is recovered.
These patterns can suggest buildup. Roots, offsets and pipe defects also produce recurring blockages, and buildup often accompanies them rather than occurring alone.
How buildup is addressed
The method follows the material.
Mechanical clearing opens a path and, with an appropriately sized head, removes a meaningful share of what is on the wall. It is the practical choice where access is limited, and where the pipe's condition rules out working it harder.
More aggressive cleaning methods can remove more of a grease layer, but they also place greater force on the pipe carrying it. In an older or unknown line that trade-off deserves thought before the work rather than after. Why pipe condition decides the method.
Scale is more stubborn than grease. How much can be removed depends on the pipe's condition, and older cast iron limits how aggressively it can be worked. Sometimes the honest answer is that the surface can be improved rather than restored.
Limitations
- Buildup returns. Cleaning resets the pipe's condition; it does not change what passes through it afterward.
- How thoroughly a wall can be cleaned depends on the pipe's condition, and fragile pipe limits the options.
- Scale cannot generally be returned to a smooth surface.
- Restoring drainage and restoring capacity are not the same result, and the difference is not visible from the fixture.
Camera inspection after cleaning is the practical way to see how much of the wall was actually recovered.
What to reasonably expect
Expect the method to be chosen for the material and the pipe. Expect a realistic account of how much of the wall was recovered rather than a claim that the line is as good as new. Expect to be told if the pipe's condition limits what cleaning can achieve.
